In
2004, SSG Alejandro, a soldier with the Army's First
Cavalry Division stationed in Baghdad, Iraq, requested
donations of traditional archery equipment for his
unit. The MLA answered the call, spearheaded by MLA
President John Vasos, and was proud to assist SSG
Alejandro with his efforts in the creation of the Camp
Cuervo
Archery Club. The MLA, with generous donations from
countless individuals, businesses, and other
organizations, sent bows, arrows, targets, and assorted
archery tackle to Camp Cuervo for the troops stationed
there to enjoy. SSG Alejandro's unit is now back
home, but the spirit of the Camp Cuervo Archery Club
lives on.
John Vasos is in contact with
troops from other units on a daily basis, and it has become his personal
mission to promote traditional archery at military locations in Iraq and
Afghanistan. He has also spent a lot of time getting other
Michigan sportsmen's organizations involved with supporting these
units. With the close assistance of Jon Stewart, Pat Brown and Ken
Scollick, John continues to collect and ship traditional archery
equipment donations to units in need.
If any of you
have bows, arrows, or other traditional archery tackle you would like to
donate to help the men and women of our armed services pass their
off-duty time, please help. Contact John Vasos at:
